Why Radiographs are important?

What you, as parents, see in your child's mouth is only the tip of the iceberg; a radiograph allows us to see clearly how deep the cavity is, how close it is to the nerve, where the permanent bud is developing, whether the tooth can be repaired, and many other factors. The majority of the time, the decision is between being cautious and performing an indirect pulp treatment (IPT), proceeding with a pulpotomy treatment, or finishing the pulpectomy root canal treatment process. This is because an IOPA/Radiograph is a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional structure. Let's comprehend each one separately.

So, what do we see here?

  1. A failing filling or repair is seen in the first primary molar.
  2. In some circumstances, a full-coverage crown was the best course of action since multisurface fillings that had been placed in the past had not stood the test of time.
  3. The second primary molar, which has deep grooves that trap food, was supposed to have been sealed off to prevent oral discomfort.

What went wrong?

  • Ideally, dental disease should be treated rather than only cavities (DRILL n FILL). This 4-year-old developed secondary cavities, as they are known. The primary cavities were drilled and filled, but for a variety of reasons—including poor brushing techniques, a lack of flossing, in-between-meal snacking, and failing to follow up—added plaque accumulated and what is known as a new cavity developed beneath the preexisting or worn-out restoration (secondary cavities).
  • How then could the rigmarole have been avoided with a prefabricated metal crown?
  • A prefabricated metal crown surrounds the cavitated milk tooth 360 degrees, preventing the buildup of plaque or biofilm that, if left untreated, would result in further cavities. Therefore, when you completely cover the tooth, you create a space for healing, cut off the feeding source for the bacteria that produce these cavities, and thus stop the development of the cavities under the crown.
An indirect pulp therapy, or IPT, is what?
  • In indirect therapy, we are close to the nerve/pulp after removing the old restoration and the secondary cavities, but the nerve has not opened up, thus you do not notice a red spot. If so, IPT is a good option for the tooth. In the scenario mentioned above, you can see a clean cavity filled with the biomaterial BIODENTINE and topped off with a 3M stainless steel crown.
